Science

Hamilton Girls’ High School offers a range of Science subjects including Science, Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

Science is the study of how the universe works and what it is made of. There is a huge amount of scientific knowledge and to make it easier to study, the Junior Science programme is broken up into smaller specialist subject areas – The Living World, The Physical Word, The Material World and Planet Earth and Beyond. In this Junior Science programme the students use both practical and theory based activities to test their ideas and improve their understanding of today’s scientific issues. This Junior Science programme leads to NCEA level 1 Science and NCEA L2 and L3 Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

We have eight well equipped laboratories, fifteen science teachers and two science technicians. Science opens up career opportunities such as forensics, laser technologies, bioengineering, food science, environmental management, medicine, pharmacology, engineering and architecture.

About Science

Biology

Welcome to Senior Biology at Hamilton Girls’ High School.

Biology is a very popular subject with our girls’ and we offer a range of opportunities to experience practical biology, gain field trip experiences and develop knowledge relating to biological concepts and process at level seven and eight of the New Zealand Curriculum (NZC).

Senior biology builds on the biological knowledge students have gained as they progress through Year 9, 10 and 11 Science.

Year 12 and 13 Biology are at Level Seven and Eight of the NZC. The topics involved at this senior level are based under two specific strands.

The Nature of Science Strand – Understanding about science, Investigating in science, Communicating in science, Participating and contributing:

And the Living World Strand  – Life processes, ecology and evolution

Scholarship Biology is also offered to students who are completing Level Eight Biology and have gained Merit or Excellence Endorsement for Level 2 NCEA Biology.

Chemistry

Chemistry is a study of the chemical world. Topics covered include atomic structure, organic chemistry, redox chemistry and physical chemistry. A large component of the work is based on practical laboratory work.

Chemistry courses start at Level 2 (generally year 12) and progress to Level 3 (generally year 13). These courses are composed of a combination of internally and externally assessed standards.

Chemistry leads onto a huge variety of further courses and careers including, nursing, medicine, engineering, technology, horticulture, biochemistry and food science.

Physics

Physics at level two and three is the study of natural phenomena – physical things that are encountered in everyday living. Topics covered include relationships between physical quantities, light and waves, mechanics, radioactivity and electricity. A large component of the work is based on practical laboratory work. This course is composed of a combination of internally and externally assessed standards.

We have eight well equipped laboratories, fifteen science teachers and two science technicians.

Physics opens up career opportunities such as engineering, architecture aircraft, computer science, biophysics, medicine and manufacturing.

We offer Physics at NCEA levels 2 & 3.
