Technology encompasses Digital Technology, Food, Design & Visual Communication and Textiles.
Digital technology offers the opportunity to change from a consumer of digital media to a creator of unique outcomes, applying industry standard design and development methods to create a multitude of different outcomes from image and video editing with adobe products and other unique software. Learn programming in coding languages used around the world from C#, Java, Python to HTML and CSS; the possibilities are endless. At NCEA Level, Digital splits into: Digital Technology; where you continue to develop and hone your skills in design and development of digital media products, setting you up with portfolio quality work and an excellent benchmark for higher education; and Workplace Technology; where you will perfect skills that will prepare you to tackle anything that you may be faced with in whatever job you enter.
Food is such an important part of our lives and we all need to eat to stay healthy. Our world is becoming increasingly complex and requiring us to become more resourceful. We face serious diet related issues as a nation and have been seeing a resurgence of more homemade foods. Being aware of what we eat and how this affects our well being is more important to our young people than ever before.
At Hamilton Girls High School we offer a range of food related subjects, from years 9-13, that aim to help students learn important life long skills about food selection, preparation and choices. While we have a strong emphasis on nutrition and health, students also have the opportunity to be creative and to develop new food products in the technology areas.
Design and Visual Communication (formerly Graphics), involves the application of a design process to Architectural, Engineering, and Media designed products. Students develop skills and knowledge of design, drawing, modelling techniques and CAD (computer aided design). These skills are applied in Spatial (Architecture, Interior and Landscape) and Product Design (Industrial and Engineering) projects. This allows students to experience a range of possible contexts and design possibilities that apply directly to tertiary study and potential careers. Students exhibit their design work at the end of the year.
Textiles Technology fosters creativity and innovation in design using textiles materials.
The context for student design projects are regularly updated to allow students to experience a range of experts and experiences that encourage them to think differently, try new skills and extend their knowledge of design. Individualised projects offer students the ability to meaningfully connect with a theme and interpret it for themselves.
Fashion focused courses offer knowledge of the design process and the design industry and skills based training including pattern making and construction.
